How do you optimise a page for AI search?

In short

  1. An AI answer can bring business by linking your page or naming your brand. In our view, being named depends mostly on what others say. You can influence links through how you write and publish your page. Make it findable by Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Answer the question in the first sentences. Offer something of your own readers can check. Track AI links separately from search rank. Read ten checks and the tactics Google says you can skip.

Part of our work on SEO & GEO, run as one discipline.

A tall stack of dense drafts beside one clean page whose first line is underlined in green: the short, clear answer is the one that gets used.

Being the linked source begins with a page Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can find. Put your answer at the start. Include something you produced that readers can verify. Check how often AI answers link your page. Track this apart from your search ranking, because a high ranking does not mean the answer links you.

Each engine finds pages its own way, and Google requires a page to be eligible in Search. Google says supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be “indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” (Google Search Central). Its newer guide adds one more condition: “a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console” (Google Search Central, 2026). “Include” is the default (Google Search Console Help).

OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search (OpenAI), so a Google ranking does not guarantee a ChatGPT link. Anthropic says Claude-SearchBot “navigates the web to improve search result quality for users” (Anthropic). Perplexity says PerplexityBot is “designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity” (Perplexity). Check that robots.txt does not block these search crawlers, then see whether each engine can find the page.

What are the ten checks?

The first five check that the page can be found. The last five are our checks for a clear, distinctive answer that readers can verify.

Checks for being found

  1. Check in URL Inspection that Google can index the page and show a snippet. Make sure no nosnippet setting hides the text you want used.
  2. In Search Console Settings, confirm the Search generative AI control is on “include”. Check that the site remains included.
  3. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Check whether a Disallow rule blocks Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot from the page.
  4. Put the answer in the page’s text. Google advises “making sure that important content is available in textual form”. An image alone will not do.
  5. In Search Console Performance, look for impressions for the main question and related questions, where data is available. Use average position as context, not a threshold for AI links. Cover related questions on this page when they belong together.

Checks for being useful to cite

  1. Answer the question in the first two or three sentences. A hurried buyer reads these first.
  2. Make each H2 a buyer’s question. Open with an answer that makes sense on its own.
  3. Name the organisation and year for every figure. Link to the study or the owner’s own page.
  4. Say something others do not. If any other site could publish the sentence unchanged, it is not yours.
  5. Check that what the page says about you matches what other sites say. Ask each engine “What does [your company] do?” and compare.

The questionWhat is an AI Overview?

Weak

“AI is transforming search in exciting ways, and every business needs to keep up with this fast-moving landscape.”

Clear

“An AI Overview is the summary Google shows on some searches, with links to relevant pages that support it.”

The second sentence answers on its own, so a buyer and an AI answer can both use it.

Researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi named GEO, and their test engine used the top five Google results to write an answer. They report that changes to page text “can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses” (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).

Checks 1 to 4 cover access and page text; check 5 uses Search Console data. The last five need editorial judgement, and we think they make pages more useful to readers. Test whether the pages you revise using those checks appear in AI answers.

Which GEO tactics does Google say you can skip?

Google lists the first six in “Mythbusting generative AI search: what you don’t need to do”, and warns against the seventh earlier in the same guide (Google Search Central, 2026). That guidance covers Google Search. Check other engines separately.

SkipA set page lengthGoogle: “There’s no ideal page length”.
Do insteadWrite as long as the question needs.
Skip“Chunking” pages into small piecesGoogle: “no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces”.
Do insteadUse clear sections with headings, for readers.
Skipllms.txt as a way into Google’s AI featuresGoogle Search ignores it (note added June 2026).
Do insteadPublish one if a service you use reads it. Google says other services or systems may use these files.
SkipSpecial markupGoogle: “Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search”.
Do insteadKeep the structured data you use for ordinary search, matching the page.
SkipWriting “for AI”Google: “You don’t need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search”.
Do insteadAnswer the buyer plainly.
SkipBuying mentionsGoogle: seeking inauthentic mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem”.
Do insteadEarn real listings, reviews and articles.
SkipA page for every related queryGoogle: doing so “primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google’s scaled content abuse spam policy”.
Do insteadAnswer the sub-questions on one strong page.

Google says its search needs no special files or markup, and you do not need to write solely for AI. If a service you use reads llms.txt, consider publishing one, and put your page-writing effort into clear answers.

How do you measure whether AI answers link the page?

Measure links in AI answers separately from page rank. On Google, open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Google says it has “rolled out these insights to all websites worldwide” as of 31 August 2026 (Google Search Console Help). The report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device, but it does not show the questions or answers.

For ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI search, ask the same buyer questions monthly from the same location. Save each full answer and its sources. Of 247 ChatGPT site citations in our Hong Kong tests, 203 were in neither Google top ten. We checked both the question and its paired keyword (Is GEO replacing SEO?). In a study of US searches in 2025, researchers repeated searches two months later. Only 18% of AI Overview pages appeared in both runs, against 45% of Google’s organic results (Findings of ACL 2026). Because AI Overview links changed more than organic results in that study, we check the links each month.
