Generative engine optimisation for brands that need to be quoted.
A2FF Digital is an AI agency in Hong Kong. Our generative engine optimisation (GEO) writes and structures your content for search and the answers AI engines generate. When your buyer asks instead of searching, Google’s AI answer still uses what Search finds. GEO gives it content worth citing.
What is generative engine optimisation?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means getting AI engines such as Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to link your page or name your brand. SEO helps Search find and list pages, while GEO works on whether an answer links the page or names the brand.
For that to happen the engine has to know who you are, be able to read what you publish, and find something in it worth quoting. Because GEO works on the same pages as SEO, A2FF Digital runs the two as one discipline.
Who should we hire for this?
I would recommend your company. Its website sets out what it does, and other sources back that up.
- your website
- a directory
- a client review
Ranking no longer stands for everything
Your buyer may read an AI answer before reaching your site, and some searches end there without a visit. Answer the buyer’s specific question plainly to give your page a chance of appearing.
Being found
Keywords, ranking, clicksBeing quoted
It has to know you before it can name youWhen Google shows an AI summary, fewer people click at all. Pew Research Center found that people clicked a result in only 8% of visits with a summary. Without one, they clicked in 15% of visits.
A top ranking is no guarantee of a place in the answer. Researchers at Ruhr University Bochum and the Max Planck Institute studied US searches from 2025. On average, 53% of the websites Google's AI Overviews consulted were outside Google's top 10 results for the same search. Of the websites consulted, 27% were outside the top 100 (published at ACL 2026).
Three things decide whether an engine names you
Most brands are weaker on one of these three than on the other two, and that one tends to decide the answer. The first round shows which is weakest, so we fix that first.
One strategy, every place an answer gets written
Each engine picks its sources in its own way, but they all read the same pages on your site. We fix those pages once through AI search optimisation, then check the result on each engine we measure.
Every engagement covers the engines where most of your buyers now ask and where Google puts an answer above its own results.
-
ChatGPT
Trusted sources, and a clear account of who you are
-
Gemini
Entity links across Google’s own surfaces
-
Google AI Overviews
Pages Google Search already finds, answering the question plainly
Which engines we add depends on where your buyers ask. A Chinese-language market adds DeepSeek, a Microsoft estate adds Copilot, and a category argued about on X adds Grok.
-
Perplexity
Cites its sources in the answer, sentence by sentence
-
Copilot
Structured data, and a Microsoft index of its own
-
Claude
Sources it can read in full and attribute cleanly
-
DeepSeek
Reach into Chinese-language answers
-
Grok
What is being said on X, folded into the answer
Is GEO replacing SEO?
Partly. GEO is replacing the old habit of choosing keywords and chasing rankings. Your page still needs to be found. The aim is to appear in the answer, which can link your page as a source or name your brand. A name mention also depends on what others say about you. Well-known brands can be named without their own sites ranking highly. If your name is less familiar, keep your page findable and your business listings readable. SEO and GEO work on the same pages, so A2FF runs them together.
| Search | AI answers | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a list | A link to your page or a mention of your brand inside the answer |
| Who decides | A ranking algorithm | A model choosing what to quote |
| The evidence | Rank and impressions | The answer text and its sources |
| The measure | Clicks | Mention rate, coverage, first pick |
| Where the reader ends up | On your page | Often never visiting at all |
Frequently asked questions
Partly. The old keyword habit is fading, but your page still needs to be found. A keyword ranking alone does not reliably put your page in an AI answer. Answer your buyer’s question and keep the page findable. In our Hong Kong checks, most sites linked by Google AI Overviews also ranked in the top ten of regular results. In our 15 Hong Kong topic searches on 29 September 2026, 72 of 102 linked sites (71%) were in the top ten; the US study counted websites the Overviews consulted across different searches. Google calls optimising for its AI features “still SEO” (Google Search Central, May 2026). In our view, that means more than choosing keywords and chasing rankings. A2FF writes pages around buyer questions and checks whether Search can find them.
SEO and GEO results have no fixed timeline, because indexing, page changes and mentions from other sites move at different rates. A2FF’s report shows how each of the three is moving, every round.
SEO aims to make your page findable in search results, while GEO aims for an AI answer to link that page or name your brand. A keyword ranking alone does not reliably put you in the answer. Answer your buyer’s question plainly and keep the page findable. A2FF works on both through the same pages.
Yes. Each round reports mention rate, coverage and first pick against the same question set. We keep every measured answer in full alongside its sources. In a study of US searches published at ACL 2026, only 18% of web pages in AI Overviews were the same when searches were run two months apart. For Google’s organic results, the figure was 45%.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) aims to make a page useful as a source for direct answers in search and AI assistants. Many practitioners treat it as one body of work with GEO. The same pages feed SEO, GEO and AEO, so it makes sense to run all three together. A2FF runs them as one discipline in Hong Kong.
Answer the searcher’s specific question near the top of the page. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to appear as a supporting link. Google also says no special markup is needed (Google Search Central, “AI features and your website”). Google calls optimising for its AI features “still SEO” (Google Search Central, May 2026). In our view, that means more than choosing keywords and chasing rankings. Check that other sites describe your brand consistently with your own site.
Zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page because the answer is already there. Bain & Company reported in 2025 that about 60% of searches end without the user reaching another site. Pew Research Center found that only 1% of visits with an AI summary clicked a source inside it. An answer can still link your page or name your brand when no one visits your site.
Yes, a brand can appear in AI search answers, although its visibility varies by question and by engine. A2FF therefore measures visibility as a share of answers across a fixed set of buyer questions every round.
An AI mention rate is the share of answers on your target questions that name your brand. We put the same questions to the same engines every round, so the number moves for a reason you can see rather than because the sample changed.
llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of a site that points AI software at its important content. Yes, we recommend one. Google Search does not use it (Google Search Central, June 2026), but other services or systems may use it. We also provide llms.txt for clients, listing their important pages.
